Residents of Maraban Jos community on the outskirts of Kaduna metropolis are still devastated following the gruesome murder of Ummulkhair, a mother of four, by a mob over an alleged, unproven case of child kidnapping.

The Islamic teacher had reportedly stopped to ask some children for directions to a lecture venue when residents accused her of attempting to abduct them. Police rescued her and placed her in protective custody at a nearby station, but hundreds of angry residents later stormed the facility, overpowered officers, forcibly removed her, and set her body ablaze.

The Kaduna State Police Command has described the killing as a direct assault on the rule of law, confirming the arrest of several suspects while a manhunt continues for others involved. Amnesty International has since condemned the killing and called for an investigation into allegations that police officers handed the victim over to the mob.

Umar Mohammed Ajingi reports that the situation is perceived to have cast doubt on communal efforts to safeguard innocent citizens, amid growing concern over Nigeria’s rising pattern of mob violence driven by suspicion, rumour, and unverified claims.
